All new cars must meet certain federal safety standards. However, this doesn’t mean all cars are equally safe. Some vehicle manufacturers go beyond the required safety minimums. And some may have certain design characteristics or performance features that make them more prone to accidents. Learn more about the safety features you should look for when purchasing a vehicle.
SHOPPING FOR A SAFE VEHICLE
Consider these three safety features when purchasing a vehicle:
-
Crash-worthiness: These vehicle features reduce the risk of death or serious injury when a crash occurs. See crash-worthiness ratings at: www.iihs.org.
-
Anti-lock brakes: Anti-lock brakes pump automatically many times a second to prevent lockup, allowing you to keep control of the car.
-
Daytime running lights: These lights automatically turn on with your car, making the vehicle more visible to oncoming drivers.
Belts, airbags and head restraints all work together to protect you in a serious crash. Lap/shoulder belts hold you in place, reducing the chance you’ll slam into something hard or get ejected from the crashing vehicle. Keep these safety features in mind when shopping for a vehicle.
